INTERVIEW: Johnny Cupcakes x BU Today

Johnny Cupcakes, also known as Johnny Earle, visited Boston University and did an interview with BU Today. Check out excerpts from the interview here:

BU Today: Why are your T-shirts so popular with customers?

Earle: We don’t sell our products to any stores wholesale. This means our customers can only purchase our products through our website and our physical shops. The great thing about this is that we’re able to control the customer’s experience. Almost everything we make is limited edition. Once an item is gone, it may be gone forever. This creates an urgency to shop, as well as a higher appreciation for our products, since they are so rare. It also creates brand longevity. People appreciate what nobody else has. If you flood the market with your product just to make a quick buck, you could feel a backlash and become another trend. We keep everything personal, friendly, fun, and innovative. Being loyal to our customers and not selling out gives them a better reason to support us.It’s important for me to pay attention to details. All of our T-shirts and merchandise are displayed in vintage curved glass bakery cases and refrigerators. Even the tags sewn into the T-shirts are in the shape of miniature oven mitts. We use custom pastry boxes rather than plastic bags, a nutrition facts sign for the sizing chart, and lots more. Building a memorable experience for my customers was important to me even if I had to go broke doing it. You have to spend an arm and a leg to make more arms and legs. If you focus on creating an original experience, people will talk about it—and you won’t have to pay a dime for advertising.

INTERVIEW: Bobby Hundreds x Hypebeast

Co-Founder of the Los Angeles based clothing brand, The Hundreds, Bobby Hundreds sat down with Hypebeast.com and conducted this interview “A Conversation with Bobby Hundreds”. Read it below:

The Hundreds growth… is both organic and deliberate. We follow the heart of the brand, we listen very closely to it’s needs and sensibilities, as if it were a child’s future. To some, we’re too conservative and perhaps overly protective, but the idea is long-term growth instead of overnight blowout. You want your daughter to go to college and build a career, right? You don’t want to throw some clear heels on her and twirl her on the pole.

But our growth is all very strategic and driven by a logical trajectory. That, and the unbending adoration of teenage boys around the world.

California culture is like none other because… it’s every culture. The diversity across ethnic demographics, socioeconomics, sexuality, politics and religion all funnel into a spectrum of captivating subcultures. This is the birthplace of skateboarding, streetwear and we have our own interpretation of hip-hop and punk. It’s hard to grow up here and not be open-minded and exposed to cultural inspiration. Plus, California girls… dude… must be something in the avocados.

INTERVIEW: Theophilus London x Interview Magazine

Interview Magazine does like their name and interviews Theophilus London, they call him “Hip-Hop’s Newest Name”. His fans should appreciate this as it takes a closer look at how TL got started in the music industry and more:

MICHAEL POLLOCK: When did you start performing music?

THEOPHILUS LONDON: I started performing music about the age of 16. I lived in Brooklyn, New York, and this thing called the Flatbush Fair comes once a year. That was my first time on stage. First of all, I was overdressed, so that’s why every day of my life I dress down as a motherfucker. I was overdressed, and I wasn’t standing right. I was nervous as fuck and got booed. I even got booed on BET once. Fuck BET. It’s the worst channel of all time. I got booed on BET, but now it’s awesome to come to Austin and even go to Europe and all around the world.

POLLOCK: Just from following your Twitter, I know you’ve been traveling a lot, mostly recording.

LONDON: Yeah, I went to Stockholm a bunch to work on the album and to LA. So it was LA then Stockholm; LA then Stockholm; LA, Stockholm. That’s what it’s been. I went to Jamaica on my own. I went to Trinidad and Tobago just to go to Fashion Week over there. I went to Japan last year. I went to Korea last year. This is all based off the strength of my brand relationships and the fact that I love to travel. And it’s not going to stop. I went through two passports last year, full.

MAGAZINE: Chris Brown | Page Six

Chris Brown was featured in Page Six magazine for their March 10th issue. Check out some excerpts from his interview:

About being humble:

“People kind of get clouded, and then when they get up to the top,
they kind of lose a bit of themselves and they’re not as humble. So
knowing how it can be taken away and given back and taken away again,
it kind of just taught me to be focused.”

About his new record, F.A.M.E. (for Forgiving All My Enemies):

“Fame is what everybody seeks. I get an adrenaline rush from it. But
fame is basically love and hate all in one. Without bad there is no
good, without good there is no bad. Everybody who dissed me now wants
to say ‘Hey.’ They wanna get on the record. They wanna let me back in
the door. The last two years, everybody dissed me. But my fans were so
dedicated. The way I look at it is, you can’t walk around mad, because
then you just prove everybody right that you’re an angry person. So
‘F.A.M.E.’ means ‘Forgiving All My Enemies,’ and also ‘Fans Are My
Everything.’ I’m dedicating it to my fans.”

I posted this for people to get hip and get to know who Esperanza Spalding is. For those who don’t know, she’s the woman who, to many people’s surprise, won Best New Artist at the Grammys on Sunday (over Drake and Justin Bieber, who were more favored to win). She had a nice sound, and she discusses her music and take to her sounds in the video. It’s a little long, but it’s worth a watch if you want to get to know her.

INTERVIEW: Va$htie Kola x Sneaker Freaker Magazine

Music video director and fashion designer, Va$htie Kola did a interview recently with Sneaker Freaker magazine. Check out a few photos from her shoot and excerpts from the interview here:

How challenging is it as a female director working in such a male ego driven scene?

It’s hard for some men to understand your capabilities if they aren’t used to seeing a woman in a traditionally male-driven occupation, I understand that. What is really unfortunate is that it can be a boy’s club - men wanting to collaborate with other men. There are so many female directors that get overlooked because maybe these men don’t think that we understand the angles of ‘sex’, ‘street’ or ‘masculinity’… but, we do. Realistically, it’s challenging to be anything in the world. I’d have issues if I was a black man or if I was a gay woman or if I was deaf or if I lived in a third world country. Everyone has challenges and I seriously can’t complain, considering there are people who have much bigger problems than me ‘being a girl in a man’s world’.
